Scoping Comments Sought for Trail Improvements in the Sherwins
Dear Trail Enthusiasts, we are excited to announce important progress on some long awaited trail projects in the Sherwins. The next phase is taking shape and your constructive comments can help. The Mammoth Ranger District of the Inyo National Forest is seeking comments for a proposed action to implement trail improvements in the Sherwins area.
The proposed project, the Sherwin Area Recreation Plan (SHARP Phase II), would create a well-designed system of non-motorized trails that includes multiple loop opportunities of varying lengths and levels of challenge adjacent to the Town of Mammoth Lakes and will provide for improved trail-user experiences while reducing impacts to sensitive natural and cultural resources. The proposed action is currently available for a fourteen-day comment period beginning on April 6th. This scoping period provides those interested in or affected by this proposal an opportunity to make their concerns known prior to decision. Comments are most useful if received by April 20, 2018 and should address issues, opportunities, concerns, and suggestions for the proposed project.
The proposed action includes:
- Reconstruct and Designate User-Created Trails
- Construct Natural Surface Loop/Connection Trails
- Construct Permeable Surface, Multi-Use Pathway
- User-Created Trail Rehabilitation and Closure
Trail construction and improvement work is anticipated to begin in summer of 2018 and possibly continue into 2019. The work will be completed in partnership with the Town of Mammoth Lakes under authorization of the Mammoth Ranger District. We look forward to a productive season of work and will have many opportunities to volunteer.
