It’s HOT and it’s August, so that means it’s time for the 4th annual Skip Harvey Memorial Summer of Stewardship Trail Day on the Mountain View and Uptown/Downtown trails of the Mammoth Lakes Trail System. Skip Harvey was a long time Town Council Member and the founder and former owner of the Basecamp Café here in Mammoth Lakes.  Skip had a passion for the Uptown/Downtown and Mountain View trails, and he was also an original founder of MLTPA. For the last four years, his family has made generous donations to Mammoth Lakes Trail System Trail Days events in his honor by providing a very special prize giveaway. 

The Mammoth Lakes Trail System Trail Maintenance team continues to work on the Mountain View Trail this week. The videos below show a section of the trail that was very badly damaged by erosion. We are pleased with the results of our maintenance efforts.

The Mammoth Lakes Trail System Soft Surface Trail Maintenance Program is moving right along. We are currently working on the Mountain View Trail. There is a lot of damage from erosion. We are fixing a lot of channeling and creating rolling grade dips to prevent erosion from happening in the future. The videos below offer a glimpse of what we are dealing with.

June 4 is the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day, the country’s largest celebration of trails. National Trails Day events take place in every state across the country and include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, birdwatching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more. Here in Mammoth Lakes, we’re going to celebrate by giving back to some of our precious local treasures, the trails of the Mammoth Lakes Trail System up on Panorama Dome.

The snow is melting and the Mammoth Lakes Trail System (MLTS) team is preparing for a productive season of trail work. Thanks to the support of the community, its leadership, and strong partnerships, we have the resources to make a real difference out on the ground in 2016. Our team will be working hard to improve trail facilities with a focus on soft surface trail maintenance and installing new USFS standard signs throughout the trail system.
